Are You Living in Light of the End?

In this episode, Pastors Whit George and Ethan Vanse explore Mark 13 and living with eternity in mind.

Check it Out:

Jesus isn’t giving us Mark 13 so we can overlay modern events on it like some apocalyptic decoder ring.

He’s not trying to get us to guess dates or piece together global conspiracies.

He’s being pastoral.
And what does that mean?

A pastor is a shepherd. Think Psalm 23. Think quiet waters and valleys and a rod and staff that comfort. Jesus is doing exactly that in Mark 13—He’s leading His disciples through what will be some really scary things. He’s preparing them—not panicking them.

Yes, He talks about some tough stuff—wars, betrayal, suffering, false teachers, and the end of days. But the heart of it is this:
“How are you going to respond when this happens?”

Not Just for Them—But for Us

Mark 13 is interesting because Jesus speaks to different groups of people at once.

  • His current disciples: “Here’s what you will go through.”

  • His future followers: “What I say to you I say to all.”

  • Those alive at His return: “Then they will see the Son of Man coming…”

Whether you’re standing at the foot of the temple or waiting for Christ’s return, His message is the same:

Live ready. Live with perspective.

The Power of Perspective

When you have a savings goal, you interpret daily spending differently when you know what you’re saving for.

It’s the same with faith. Knowing Jesus is returning helps us handle bad news, uncertainty, even suffering. It reminds us: “I belong to a different kingdom.”

When we remember that, we don’t have to live bitter.
We’re not defined by what’s happened to us.
The return of Jesus is the stake in the ground we hold onto.
It reminds us that this life is not all there is.

Are You Living in Light of the End?

Here’s a hard but honest question:
If you don’t care about Jesus’ return…are you really living in light of it?

Have you bought into the lie that this life can produce heaven? That if you just work hard enough, save enough, perfect yourself enough—you’ll find it here?

Jesus’ words are both a comfort and a warning.

To the weary: “Endure. There’s more coming.”
To the comfortable: “Don’t be fooled. Don’t follow false prophets or false heavens.”

Be careful of anyone—pastors, podcasters, influencers—who downplay the cost of following Jesus.

Be careful of any gospel that removes the cross and replaces it with “just follow your heart.”

There’s always a cross before there’s a resurrection.

The Real Goal: Faithful, Not Famous

The success of your faith isn’t outward success.
It’s inward renewal.
Jesus is more concerned with your endurance than your platform.

Don’t fall for the false saviors of hustle, perfectionism, control, or even religion.

When life gets hard, Jesus doesn’t say, “Just hang in there, punish yourself a little, and try harder.”
He says:
“Deny yourself now, and I’ll give you more than you ever hoped for.”

Endurance has a goal.

Pain without purpose is punishment.
But pain with purpose? That’s how deep joy is forged.
There’s not a version of life in Christ that promises instant gratification—but there is one that promises joy, hope, and glimpses of heaven in the in-between.

What Are You Holding Onto?

If there’s no return of Christ…there’s no hope that this life gets better than it is now.
No reason to discipline ourselves.
No reason to endure.

But Jesus is returning.
So we endure.
We stay awake.
We keep perspective.
Because He told us to.

The Cure Is Christ

He’s coming again. He hasn’t left us without hope.
He’s our Shepherd in the chaos.

So don’t just analyze the bad news. See it in light of the Good News.
The Christian life is not about fear. It’s about perspective.

And Jesus is the One who gives it.
